Moyogalpa: Gateway to Ometepe

Moyogalpa is the main entry point to Ometepe Island, located on its northwestern shore. With around 4,000–5,000 inhabitants, it’s the largest town on the island and a hub for both locals and visitors.

A Land of Ancient Peoples

This area has been inhabited for thousands of years. Early settlers included the Chorotega and later the Nahua-Nicarao, who left behind petroglyphs, ceramics, and stone carvings. Archaeological evidence suggests human presence on the island dating back to 10,000 BCE.

1529

The first European to arrive was Gabriel de Rojas in 1529. Spanish colonization brought major changes, but Moyogalpa remained a small settlement for much of the colonial period.

Pirates on the Lake

In the 17th and 18th centuries, pirates from England, France, and the Netherlands raided the island, forcing locals to hide inland. These attacks disrupted life and left lasting marks on the region’s history.

A Town of Farmers and Fishermen

Today, Moyogalpa thrives on agriculture, cattle farming, fishing, and a growing tourism industry. Locals grow crops like plantains, corn, and beans, while others work as artisans or tour guides.
